Generation No. 1

1.  JOHN H1 DARROW1 was born 1827 in Warrensburg, Warren Co. New York, and died 16 Mar 1887 in Shawano Co. Wisconsin.  He married (1) SUSAN SAVILLE Abt. 1846.  She was born 1830 in Warren, New York, and died Abt. 1858 in Wisconsin.  He married (2) SOPHIA HUGHES 1859, daughter of JOHN HUGHES and CHARLOTTE.  She was born 1843 in Wisconsin, and died 10 Jul 1865 in Belle Plaine, Shawano, Wisconsin.  He married (3) MARTHA EAGLESON 1866.  She was born 4 Mar 1827 in Cold Water Branch, Michigan, and died 3 Dec 1897 in Shawano, Shawano Co. Wisconsin.

Notes for JOHN H DARROW:

John Came to Wisconsin with two children born in New York, Richmond and Ranson. Thomas was born in Wisconsin in 1854 and I assume his mother was the same as Richmond's and Ranson's. It seems as though the mother died prior to 1860 when Sophia Hughes is listed as the wife of John. See notes on John"s other wives...

1910 census indicates James mother was born in Indiana, father in New York.

1890 Veterans census list a John H. Darrow as being a member of the 42nd Wisconsin Inf, Company F from 20 Oct 1864 to 16 Aug 1865.

Have two dates for John's death 22 March, 1889 and 16 March 1887?

Marriage: Abt. 1846

Notes for SOPHIA HUGHES:

The 1860 Shawano Co. census for Richmond Township lists John Darrrow's Family living next to the John Hughes Family. A review of the Darrow Children's ages shows that Sophia is to old to be his daughter and to young to be the mother of the other children. It is therefore assumed that Johns wife died prior to 1860 and he married Sophia Hughes. This union produced Katherine J. in 1862, Elizabeth in 1863 and possibly James in 1868.Richard, Ranson, and Thomas were sons from his first wife.

Notes for MARTHA EAGLESON:

Martha shows as the wife of John Darrow in the 1870 Shawano Co. Wisconsin census. Her age is said to be 36 however I suspect Martha may have been Sophia Hughs older sister who would be Abt 30 years old. Birth certificates and death certificates will be needed to verify these assumptions.

July 2000 received family sheet that stated James E Darrow was son of John and Martha, and that Martha's first husband was named Lent.

Mrs. Martha Darrow's obit: Shawano County Journal, Dec. 9, 1897, p. 1:

Shawano County Journal – Friday, June 24, 1881

One of the fatal accidents so common to lumbermen occurred last week, on the Wolf near Shotgun Eddy. DICK DARROW was engaged in shoving off logs near Shotgun Eddy, when he slipped from the log and fell into the river. He must have hit his head against a stone or log, as he hardly seemed to stir at first. One of his companions caught his bare arm, but the flood was so strong that he could not hold him, and he was carried into the rapids. He struck out feebly once or twice and tried to reach shore, but was so nearly paralyzed that his struggles were soon ended. His body was found the next day and brought to Shawano, and buried Monday.
