Joseph (Phippeny) Phippen - was born in 1620 in ,Weymouth,Dorsetshire,England and died on 1 Jul 1687 in Salem,Essex,Massachusetts .
Joseph married Dorcas Wood on 4 Apr 1641 in Hingham,Plymouth Co.,MA. Dorcas was born on 1 Apr 1623 in Hingham,Plymouth,Massachusetts. She died about 1692/1693 in Salem,Essex,Massachusetts . Dorcas - Research done from the book FITZPEN OR PHIPPEN and Allied Families, byGeorge D. Phippen, of Salem, Massachusetts. Joseph - The Essex Antiquarian, found and the LDSGenealogy Library in Salt Lake City, UT, 974.45 B2a Vol 9-- Obed CarterHouse. Second Report of the Record Commissioners of the City of Boston containing the Boston Records, 1634-1660, and the Book of Possessions.History of the Town of Hingham, Massachusetts, Volumes 2 and 3. The Genealogies by George Lincoln Page 112. II THE PHIPPEN FAMILY: With Special Reference to Connecticut Descendants (The American Genealogists. I--Vol. 17--pg. 1-18") Joseph Phippen (David) was granted a lot of two acres in Hingham, Mass.,1637, and was still called of Hingham Church when children were baptizedat Boston from 1645 to 1649. Before 1652 he was living as a seaman inBoston. The copy of his own chart reads, "Jos. Phippen lived years, left Jos.,Mary, Sarah, David and Sam., by Dorcas Wood." His will in 1687 calls hiswife Dorcas. But there is clearly an error of some kind. The mother ofthe four youngest children, in Boston records, was called Dorothy.Furthermore, on 15 Jan 1652/3, Dorothy "by reason of my husbands absenceand loss at sea", and "for the relief of myself and children", mortgagedto Sampson Shoare of Boston; and on 19 July 1653, Joseph Phippen ofBoston, Seaman, and Dorothie his wife, sold the dwelling house to SampsonShoare. It seems possible, particularly in view of the fact that some ofthe children of Joseph conferred the name Dorcas on children of theirown, and Joseph's failure to name two wives on his own chart that thesame woman was known both as Dorcas and Dorothy. He removed to Falmouth, where he was constable in 1661 and a grand juror in 1664; and in his 1677 deed already quoted called himself of Falmouth, carpenter. But he had been admitted an inhabitant of Salem, 1 Nov. 1665,and died there in 1687; his will, made 21 July 1687, proved 15 Sept.1687, named his wife Dorcus and five children. (Sources: - 1)

He lived for his art and for the help he could give to new artists. They traded his art to pay the bills and take care of their family. As a result, most of George Phippen's work is now in private collections throughout the United States." George Phippen, Joe Beeler, John Hampton & Charlie Dye founded the Cowboy Artists of America in 1965 to encourage the creation and collection of western art in the tradition of Charles Russell and Fredric Remington. Unfortunately, Phippen died before the new group was able to hold its first exhibition in 1966 at the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. However, his influence on today's Western American Realism painters and sculptors lives on, as does the spark he rekindled for the lost wax process of bronze casting that stems from the tiny renaissance he began in Prescott in the 1950s "Phippen's paintings and sculptures typically convey a keen sense of humor and an insight into the everyday life of working cowboys. He excelled at the looser, more painterly style of Western art in the 50s and 60s, and is known for his mastery of campfires, burning cigarettes and night skies."
