His great task was to reduce to order the petty nobles of the royal domain, who could truly be called robber barons. When Louis came to the throne, every lord of a castle robbed at will and it was not safe for even the king to pass along the road. Twenty years of hard fighting were necessary to remedy this condition, but in the end, law and order prevailed. So that such evils might not recur, every castle that was captured was destroyed or given to faithful followers.

She died on 31 Mar 1204 in Poitiers, Poitou, Aquitaine . Queen Eleanor - In an age known largely for the exploits of kings, princes, dukes, and their warriors, Eleanor of Aquitaine stood out as one of the most remarkable of women. She was the wife and mother of kings and a dominant political force in the Europe of her time. When her fagther died in 1137 she inherited his domain, which was larger than that ruled by the king of France. The same year she married the heir to the French throne, who became King Louis Vii a month afterward. During their 15-year marriage, she exerted considerable influence upon the running of the country and even accompanied him on the Second Crusade from 1147 to 1149. His jealousy led to separation, and the marriage was annulled; but she regained possession of Aquitaine. In 1152 she married Henry Plantagenet, who became Henry Ii of England two years later. Together they had eight children, among whom were Richard I the Lion-Hearted and John, both of whom later became kings of England. This union brought together England, Aquitaine, Anjou, and Normandy under one rule. Two centuries later England's various French possessions became an underlying cause of the Hundred Years' War. After the revolt of her sons against Henry Ii, Eleanor was kept in semi-confinement from 1174 to 1189, when Henry died. She then became active in affairs of state under her son Richard I and, after his death without an heir in 1199, under John. She worked for peace between France and England and helped preserve John's French domains. Eleanor died on April 1, 1204, in the monastery at Fontevrault in Anjou. (Sources: - 1) King Louis - Louis VII (born 1120, ruled 1137-80) was the eldest son of Louis VI. Shortly before his death, Louis VI arranged for his son's marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine. By this marriage southwest France was added to the domains of the new French king. Unfortunately Louis, who was very religious and prone to be jealous, soon discovered that his beautiful queen was a capricious flirt. In 1147 Louis departed for the Holy Land on the Second Crusade, taking his queen with him. This Crusade was a miserable failure. After they returned, Louis had his marriage annulled in 1152. Eleanor at once sent an embassy to Henry, count of Anjou and duke of Normandy, proposing marriage. Henry was overjoyed because the alliance transferred to him the great duchy of Guienne. Two years later Henry and Eleanor were crowned king and queen of England. France thus lost a rich territory to England, its greatest rival.

She died in 1252 . Blanche - When Louis died he made Blanche Regent and guardian of their children. Louis Ix was then 12 and Blanche ruled France alone from 1226 to 1234; dealing successfully both with a coalition of the powerful barons in 1226 - she rode into battle, dressed in white on a white horse, at the head of her troops - and with the attacks of Henry III in 1230; she was less successful with the student disturbances in Paris, which caused the university to leave the city from 1229 to 1233. She made clever alliances and expanded her territory, gaining Blois, Chartres and Sancerre by agreement with her ally Thibaut of Champagne, and Toulouse and Provence through skilful marriage treaties. A forceful character, she retained a powerful influence over Louis IX ('Saint Louis') after he came to the throne in 1236, with regard to both state affairs and religion. Her second regency lasted from 1248, when Louis set out (against her will) on a crusade, until her death four years later. With her third son, Alphonse, she maintained peace at home, despite the depletion of the country necessary to support the extravagant crusade, and negotiated personally for Louis' release after the battle of El Mansurah.

King Philip - Philip "Le Bel" called Philip the Fair was born in the year 1268, 0ne hundred and fifty years after the formation of the Knights Templar and was King of France from 1285-1314. How could someone as corrupt as he, be called by the people, Philip the Fair? The term "The Fair" was a reference to Philip IV's good looks, being tall and handsome with long blonde hair and blue eyes. Philip Le Bel, in contrast to his pleasing looks, was a cold and secretive man who had strong wishes for France to be the head of the empire. In order to accomplish this plan he would need great financial resources (which the Templars possessed) and a week and subservient Papal Throne. Philip is well known for his battles with Boniface VIII (see chronology below) At one point Philip publicly burned Boniface VIII's Bull Unam Sanctam which gave the Pope absolute supremacy over everyone.
