John Melvin - was born about 1652 in Fife, Scotland and died on 21 Aug 1726 in Concord, Mass. . John married Hannah Lewis. Hannah was born about 1655. She was the daughter of John Lewis and Mary Browne. She died on 23 May 1696 in Charlestown, Mass. .   Then John married Margaret Shamesbury in 1696 in Boston, Mass.. John - was a "Taylor" in Charlestown, Mass. and a private under Capt. Joseph Sill in the company which marched to Packchouge and camped for the night in a large Wigwam in 1676. Bought a house in Charlestown for thirty-eight pounds in 1681. Was accredited for service i King Phillips Wa   In 1684, John and Robert Melvin each paid the first rate as members of the Scots Charitable Society of Boston - the first charitable organization in the New England States. This proves their Scotch Origin as there were no other nationalities represented until 1700.   John's gravestone states his age at 74, however in a deposition in 1684 he stated his age as 28 years, a discrepancy of 1 year. Children with Hannah Lewis (Quick Family Chart) i.  John Melvin was born on 29 Aug 1679 in Charlestown, Mass. ii.  Hannah Melvin was born on 15 Aug 1681 in Charlestown, Mass.. Hannah married William Bothrel on 13 Apr 1713 in Concord. He died on 8 Apr 1726 . (Sources: - 1) Hannah - had 5 children. iii.  Robert Melvin was born on 23 Jun 1683 in Charlestown, Mass.. iv.  James Melvin was born on 20 Mar 1585/1586 in Charlestown, Mass.. James - married Mercy Hobbs in Boston in 1712. v.  Jonathan Melvin was born on 29 May 1688 in Charlestown, Mass. and died on 11 Feb 1736 in Concord, MA . See #2. below. vi.  David Melvin was born on 29 Oct 1690 in Charlestown, Mass. and died on 17 Nov 1745 . David married Mary Farrar on 8 Feb 1716 in Concord, Mass.. Mary was born on 8 Mar 1696 in Concord, Mass.. She is the daughter of Jacob Farrar and Susanna Rediate. Mary - after David died, she married John Edwards of Acton, the town adjoining Concord, in 1749. David - was a cooper in Rutland, Worcester Co., Mass. Capt. David and Mary had 10 children. vii.  Benjamin Melvin was born on 17 Feb 1694/1695 in Charlestown, Mass.. Children with Margaret Shamesbury (Quick Family Chart) viii.  Eliazer Melvin was born on 28 Jun 1703 in Concord, Mass.. ix.  Margaret Melvin was born on 28 Jun 1703 in Concord, Mass.

Jonathan Melvin - was born on 29 May 1688 in Charlestown, Mass. and died on 11 Feb 1736 in Concord, MA . He was the son of John Melvin and Hannah Lewis. Jonathan married Sarah Hartwell on 28 Feb 1714 in Concord, Mass.. Sarah was born on 28 Jul 1694 in Concord, Mass.. She is the daughter of Ebenezer Hartwell and Sarah Smeadley. Sarah - moved to Worcester, Mass. after she married Elisha Smith who was from there. Jonathan - bought a strip of land in Concord in 1724. Although his name does not appear on the various war rolls, he must have shared in some of the "fights" since he was the possessor of a sword and at least two guns. He bequeathed his sword to his fourth son and a gun to each of his sons John and Jonathan.   They lived on a farm adjoining Sarah's brother John in Concord, Mass. Sarah - married Joseph Barns in 1735/6 - 6 children. ii.  Jonathan Melvin was born on 12 Oct 1718 in Concord, Mass.. Jonathan - married Mary Brooks in 1750 in Hollis, NH. iii.  John Melvin was born on 21 May 1721 in Concord, Mass. and died about 1782 in Concord, Mass. . See #3. below. iv.  Ebenezer Melvin was born on 10 Nov 1725 in Concord, Mass.. Ebenezer - was one of the proprietors and first settlers of the town on Hollis, NH. v.  Josiah Melvin was born on 14 Jun 1727 in Concord, Mass.. Josiah married Lydia Barrett on 3 Mar 1757. Lydia was born on 6 Jun 1738. She died in 1800 . John Melvin - was born on 21 May 1721 in Concord, Mass. and died about 1782 in Concord, Mass. . He was the son of Jonathan Melvin and Sarah Hartwell. John married Hannah Heald in 1745. Hannah was born on 1 Apr 1727 in Concord, Mass. She is the daughter of Timothy Heald and Hannah Parlin. John - sold six acres of land in Acton in 1744, together with his brother-in-law Joseph Barnes. Settled in Hollis, NH, but soon returned to Concord, Mass. His estate was administered in 1782. Children: (Quick Family Chart) i.  Hannah Melvin was born on 4 Aug 1746 in Concord, Mass.. Hannah married John Allen McElwain. John was born on 12 Mar 1743 in Palmer. Hannah - On 9/27/1793 in Belsher Town, Palmer MA banns were published for John Allen McElwain Sr. and Hannah Melvin b. 8/4/1746 Concord, Middlesex MA. This was John Allen McElwain's second wife. Sarah - married Jonathan Smith or DAVIS in Worcester, Mass in 1769 - they lived in Westminster. iii.  Amos Melvin was born on 15 Jun 1751 in Concord, Mass. and died on 13 Aug 1806 in Concord, Mass. . See #4. below. iv.  Sibill Melvin was born on 11 Feb 1754 in Concord, Mass. and died on 11 Aug 1770 . v.  Mary Melvin was born on 17 May 1756 in Concord, Mass.. Mary - married a Mr. Rice and moved to Ashby, Mass. vi.  Eunice Melvin was born on 7 Jun 1756 in Concord, Mass.. Eunice - married Joseph Polly of Fitchburg in 1780. vii.  Melicent Melvin was born on 8 Aug 1760 in Concord, Mass.. viii.  Ruth Melvin was born on 1 Aug 1764 in Concord, Mass..

Amos Melvin - was born on 15 Jun 1751 in Concord, Mass. and died on 13 Aug 1806 in Concord, Mass. . He was the son of John Melvin and Hannah Heald. Amos married Anna Flatt. Anna was born about 1763. She was the daughter of Mr. Flatt and Ann Beaton. She died on 24 Jan 1830 in Concord, Mass. . Amos - - "As a member of the Concord Minute Men, he was on guard the gray dawn of Apr 19, 1775, and as the news came that the British regulars were coming, he sprang to the little meeting house and, by his vigorous ringing of the bell, roused the people to a lively sense of their approaching danger" ("Palmer Groups" - Emily Leavitt") also, Amos went with others from Concord to Boston on an alarm and to convey stores thence and returned with empty teams in 1777.   Amos appears among the lists of "6 weeks men" in Dec 1775 and Jan 1776, and among the men forming the first guard at Cambridge.   That Amos married Anna Flatt is well authenticated by their grandchildren, but the imperfect town books of Concord do not bear the record, only stating that "Amos Melvin, husband of Anna, died Aug 13, 1806".   Amos drew up his will Aug 9, 1806. In it he left his estate in charge of his wife, who was to take charge of his nine children. Besides property in Concord, he also owned land in Acton, the adjoining town. From "Battle of Concord", published in "Our Country"   CONCORD had been aroused. Dr. Prescott had reached the town twenty minutes after he left Revere and Dawes in the hands of their captors. He told Amos Melvin, the sentinel at the Court-house, that the regulars were coming. It was then about two o'clock in the morning of the 19th of April, 1775. That scion of a heroic family, who had battled with the French and Indians in recent wars, seized the bell-rope and rung out such a vehement alarm that the villagers were all aroused from their slumbers, and soon filled the streets. James - moved to Virginia. v.  John Melvin was born on 15 Jul 1790 in Concord, Mass.. John - married Sally Chandler. vi.  Joshua Melvin was born on 28 Dec 1792 in Concord, Mass.. Joshua - married Miss DURANT. vii.  Emerson Melvin was born on 1 Mar 1795 in Concord, Mass.. Emerson - married Eliza Rice. viii.  Mary Melvin was born on 14 Jun 1797 in Concord, Mass.. ix.  William Melvin was born on 5 Dec 1800 in Concord, Mass.. William - married Eliza Williams x.  Phebe Melvin Phebe - married David Lacy.

Charles Melvin - was born on 4 Nov 1784 in Concord, Mass. and died on 11 Feb 1846 in Lowell, Mass. . He was the son of Amos Melvin and Anna Flatt. Charles married Betsy Farrar on 11 Dec 1814 in Concord, Mass.. Betsy was born in 1787 in Concord, Mass.. She was the daughter of Jacob Farrar and Elizabeth Haywood. She died in 1869 . Children: (Quick Family Chart) i.  Charles Melvin Jr was born on 19 Sep 1815 in Concord, Mass. and died on 29 Nov 1841 in Concord, Mass. . ii.  Eliza Ann Melvin was born on 20 Mar 1816/1817 in Concord, Mass.. Eliza married William W. Gage in 1844. Eliza - after her marriage in 1844, moved from Concord to Woburn, Mass. Her sister Maria came to visit and find work about 1849, where she met and married George Kimball. iii.  Mary Heyward Melvin was born on 14 Apr 1819 in Concord, Mass.. iv.  Eunice Melvin was born on 9 Mar 1821 in Concord, Mass.. v.  Maria Melvin was born on 10 Mar 1823 in Concord, Mass.. Maria married George Washington Kimball on 29 Nov 1849 in Woburn, Mass.. George was born on 4 Oct 1826 in Wells, Maine. He was the son of Maj. Wilbraham Kimball and Deborah Bourne. He died on 13 Sep 1892 in Woburn, Mass . Maria - Left her home in Concord to be with her sister, Eliza (Gage) and to find employment in that town - met George there. See Kimball family for children. vi.  James Melvin was born on 20 Dec 1826 in Concord, Mass.. James - married Elizabeth Gates. vii.  Sarah Melvin was born on 31 Aug 1828 in Concord, Mass.. Sarah - married Isaac Buteau. viii.  Louisa Melvin was born on 26 Mar 1832 in Concord, Mass. and died in 1897 .
