Francis married Mary Hill about 1591 in St. Peter's Church - Tichfield. Mary was born in 1564 in Exeter, Devon, England. She died on 29 Oct 1605 in Tichfield, Hampshire, England . Francis - occupation: Clothier - Francis was a clothier by trade and left a sizeable estate. His will asked that he be buried in the parish churchyard of Titchfield. - Francis Littlefield listed 3 siblings (2 brothers and 1 sister) in his will. Edmund Littlefield - was born about 1592 in Tichfield, Hampshire, England and died on 11 Dec 1661 in Wells,ME . He was the son of Francis Littlefield and Mary Hill. Edmund married Annis (Agnes) Austin on 16 Oct 1614 in Titchfield, Hampshire, England. Annis was born on 1 Feb 1596 in Exeter, Devon, England. She is the daughter of Richard Austin. She was buried on 12 Dec 1677 in Exeter, Devon, England Annis - "Joseph had a sister Annis who mar. Edmund Littlefield, who came to New England in 1638. Francis of Dedham and Matthew of Maine are thought by some authorities to be brothers of Joseph. It is thought by some that Richard of Charlestown might have been another brother but proof is lacking. ( Moore, Edith Austin A Genealogy of the Descendants of Robert Austin of Kingstown, Rhode Island. 1951. pg. 10.) Maine Pioneers 1623-60   made will 12 Dec. 1677, giving her estate to her daus. Elizabeth Wakefield, Mary Barrett, Hannah Cloyce and Meribah; to sons Peter Cloyce and John and Thomas Littlefield; to grandchild Katherine W. Inventory in York Deeds V.   (Charles Henry Pope 1908) Edmund - occupation: Clothier - Thomas and Anne (2b) were twins   Edmund Littlefield, the father of Wells, established a permanent home, sawmill and gristmill as early as 1640-41 at the falls of the Webhannet River. He was agent of Thomas Gorges to give possession of house lots to settlers, and was one of the committee for settling the boundary between Wells and Cape Porpois, and a commissioner to try small causes from 1654 to 1661. On Dec. 11, 1661 he made his will at Wells, ME. (from Austin Families of America) About the lawsuit of 1635/6, which named Edmund and Nicholas as defendants:   The amount in the lawsuit seems to be 16 pounds. The lawsuit had something to do with Edmund buying some wool and not paying for it. His brother, Nicholas, also named in the lawsuit did reply to the effect that he didn't know anything about it and that Edmund did the buying.   Came to New England in abt 1636, probably with his two eldest sons. His wife and six children followed on the Bevis in May of 1638, with servants John Knight and Hugh Durdal.   His name appears on a paper for the purpose of government in Exeter, NH, signed on 5 Jun 1639. he was granted 21 acres of land there.   He moved to Wells, ME around 1640/41. There is a plaque in Wells, ME stating that his saw and gristmill were the first permanent structures in the town. The plaque is next to the Webhannet Falls on the site of his mill.   On 14 July 1643, he was granted 100 acres adjacent to the mill and the neck of the marsh between that and Webhannet River.   In Nov 1645, he and John Wadleigh were granted 200 acres on Southwest side of the Ogunquit River, not intrenching on town of Wells. Will of Edmund Littlefield   "....To Francis, my eldest son and Anthony and Elizabeth Wakefield my daughter, the land lying on the one side of Kennebunke with falls together with a certain quantity of marsh lying up in the woods between Cape Porpus River and Kennebunke shown 2 ____ granted by Mr. George Cleave agent of Mr. Rigby which is now come under the government of Mr. Gorges, proprietor of the Province of Maine to be equally divided...." Francis received 10 pounds, Anthony received clothing, Elizabeth received 5 pounds. (Maine Wills) December 12, 1677; mothers will written with inventory on 3/7/1678. Daughter Hannah Cloyse to get her bed and "bowlster" with Katherine Wakefield to deliver it to her. Her three daughters Elizabeth Wakefield, Mary Barrett and Hannah Cloyse to receive all "lining and woolen new and old" to be divided equally. John - married (1) Mary Mere 09 March 1649/50 in Dedham, MA. He married (2) Patience Wakefield 1655 in Wells, York, ME. vi.  Elizabeth Littlefield was born in 1627 in Tichfield, Hampshire, England and died in Wells,ME . Elizabeth - married John Wakefield who was a commissioner of Wells in 1648 and afterwards one of the selectmen. vii.  Mary Littlefield was born in 1630 and died in Wells,ME . Mary - married (1) John Barrett who died in 1662. She married (2) Thomas Page. viii.  Hannah Littlefield was born in 1633 in Tichfield, Hampshire, England and died in Wells,ME . Hannah married Peter Cloyes. Peter was born on 27 May 1640 in Waterton, Mass. He was the son of John Cloyes III and Abigail Mournings. He died on 18 Jul 1708 in Sudbury, Mass . Francis Littlefield - was born on 17 Jun 1619 in Tichfield, Hampshire, England and died in 1712 in prob. Dover, NH . He was the son of Edmund Littlefield and Annis (Agnes) Austin. Francis married Jane Hill about 1646 in Woburn, Mass. She is the daughter of Ralph Hill and Elizabeth Parker.   Then Francis married Rebecca Rust on 27 Apr 1648 in Wells, ME.   Then Francis married Mary Wade before 1689 in Wells,ME. Francis - Francis , the oldest son , has a percular history. At about the age of 7 or 8 he disappeared from his father's house. That he was born about 1619 is supported by the fact that that he was required to sign the submission to Massachusetts in 1653. This Francis did not come over with his mother on the Belvis. Phoebe married John Heard on 27 Apr 1690 in Kittery, Maine. John was born about 1667 in Sturgeon Creek, York, ME. He was the son of James Heard and Shuah Conley Starbuck. He died before 1751 in Kittery, Maine . Phoebe - On Sunday afternoon, 4 july 1697 the Indians ambushed Maj Frost, his wife and two sons, John Heard and his wife, Phebe and Dennis Downing were returning from Sunday meeting. A mile from the garrison a party of Indians had formed an ambush near a large rock at the side of the road.When the party approached they were fired upon. Maj FROST and DOWNING were killed, and Phebe (Littlefield) Heard was mortally wounded. John tried to put her on a horse, but she begged him to leave her and save the children at home. The rest of the party escaped. The site of this attack is now known as "AMBUSH ROCK". Its located near Eliot, Maine. See Heard family for children. iv.  Rachel Littlefield Rachel - married William Frost, 6 December 1694. v.  Sarah Littlefield was born on 15 Nov 1649 in Wells,ME. Sarah - married (1) John Wells Abt. 1664 in Salisbury, MA.. She married (2) William Sawyer Bef. November 1677, son of John Sawyer. vi.  Hannah Littlefield was born on 5 Jan 1651/1652. vii.  Deliverance Littlefield was born on 5 Jul 1655. viii.  James Littlefield was born on 2 Oct 1657 in Wells,ME and died May 1690 in Wells,ME . James married Ketherine Heard. James - May 6, 1690.   Dear and loving wife,   - These are to let you know that we are all well here, blessed by God for it, and all our children remember their duty to you. The Indians have killed Goodman Frost and James Littlefield, and carried away Nathaniel Frost and burnt several houses in Wells. I would have our son John hire a boat and bring you from Saco and some of our things, if he possibly can. I fear it is not safe to come by land. John, be as careful as you can of your mother, for it is very dangerous times. The Lord only knows whether we shall ever see one another any more. Praying for your prosperity   Your loving husband till death.   Roger Hill   Remember my love to son Fletcher and daughter, and all their children, and to all my neighbors in general. ix.  Isaac Littlefield was born on 22 Jan 1659/1660 in Wells,ME. x.  Abigail Littlefield was born on 26 Mar 1662. Francis (2) Littlefield - was born about 1631 and died before 6 Feb 1674/1675 in Wells, York Co., Maine . He was the son of Edmund Littlefield and Annis (Agnes) Austin. Francis married Meribah Wardwell. Meribah was born on 14 May 1637 in Boston, Suffolk Co., MA. She died after 1710 in Wells, York Co., Maine . Meribah - In 1710 on petition of Jonathan and David that their mother Mrs. Meribah Littlefield was liable to be chargeable to them beyond their proportion, her children and grandchildren were ordered to support her although only sons and sons-in-law named specifically in the order. (Her date of death has been given as 12 December 1679, but this is obviously in error.)   (from D. B. Robinson's Genealogy Page) (Sources: - 3) Francis - His brother, Francis, disappeared from his father;s house and was mourned for dead, so this Francis was given the same name when he was born.   Occupation: House-carpenter Note: His will is dated 5 Feb. (He d. 6 Feb.) 1674/5 and names wife Meribah, daughter of Wm. Wardwell, and sons Joseph and Nathan executors. The inventory included his sawmill and cornmill. Benjamin Littlefield - was born on 8 Sep 1730 in Wells, York Co., Maine and died on 5 Oct 1821 in Wells, York Co., Maine . He was the son of Joseph Littlefield and Abigail Storer. Benjamin married Dorcas Black on 11 Dec 1753 in York, York Co., ME. Dorcas was born on 4 Feb 1725/1726 in York, York Co., ME. She died on 29 Oct 1810 in Wells, York Co., Maine . (Sources: - 3) Benjamin -   Benjamin Littlefield was one of the substantial men of the town. His parents were familiar with the experience of the settlers in the times of the Indian wars, and he was taught the necessity of courage to meet the events of life, and diligence and industry in its ordinary pursuits.   Like others born in that day of hardship, he had but few opportunities for education. But he so improved those that he had, and acquired so much of the rudiments of knowledge, that in 1760 he was chosen clerk of the proprietors of the township, and held that office for forty-three years. He spent his life in milling and farming.   He was the owner of the grist-mill near his house, and had an interest in the saw-mill in which he found employment. He was a man of very correct habits, and of a modest and retiring disposition, choosing to keep aloof from the bustle of the world, and therefore did not exercise that influence which a more frequent intercourse with the world, and a more active interest in town affairs, would have given him. In 1776 and 1777, he was one of the selectmen of the town. He died Oct. 5, 1821, at the age of ninety-one, leaving children and grand-children who have maintained an honorable standing in society.
