Jacent Fargo - was born about 1622 in France. Jacent - sailed from Lyons, France to Sydney, Wales about 1662 with his wife and family. Known then as JACENTZ FARGEAU.   Both Angeline Fargo, who married Smith Bibbins, and William George Fargo who founded Wells, Fargo are descended from Jacent through his son Moses Fargo. Moses Fargo - was born in 1649 in Sidney, Wales and died on 11 Aug 1732 in Montville, New London, Conn. . He was the son of Jacent Fargo. Moses married Sarah. Moses - emigrated from Wales to America in 1668 on a vessel called "Armenia" and landed in what is now Norwich, Conn. where they soon came into possession of a tract of land. They were men of energy, thrift and foresight, and in consequence amassed wealth and secured themselves an extensive influence in business and social circles.   Moses was granted a house in New London, Conn. in 1680. In 1690, he was in Norwich and in 1694 was granted land "on a hill above the rock where the house stands". In 1722 he appears among the inhabitants of the North Parish of New London in what is now Montville, Conn.   12-18-1679 Town Meeting, New London, Conn   Moses Fergoes requests a small parcel of land to build a house ? and shop and a small herbe garden on that ground that lies near the mill bridge over against the upper end of Mr Pyrams lott, which is granted on condition that he build on the same and reside thereon five or six years.   Moses was the common ancestor of Angeline Fargo who married Smith Bibbins and William George Fargo who founded Wells Fargo. email from: Jeff Fargo June 2008   My name is Jeff Fargo. I am a descendant of Moses Fargo and our line is that of his son Aaron. First, thank you so much for the Fargo genealogical information. Our’s had been lost for years prior to 1850. There are two clarifications that I suggest for the early information in ‘Our Folk’. First the city in Wales where the Fargo family landed after leaving France is listed as Sydney. There is no town in Wales of that name (or Sidney) in any of the records that I have seen. I believe, but cannot substantiate that the name of the town was Lydney, England. Lydney was a port that saw much ship traffic from the continent. The written ‘L’ and ‘S’ of that day was very similar and Lydney would have been a logical destination for ship traffic from France. It is also adjacent to Wales where it is reported that Jacent and his family settled. The second potential error is in the name of the ship that Moses and Aaron Fargo took passage on from Wales to New London, Connecticut. It is listed as ‘Armenia’. I always thought that was a strange name for a ship that was likely built in England. A few years ago I was examining information on French Huguenots (Jacent was a Huguenot) and their religious beliefs. Many of the Huguenots leaving France at the time that Jacent left followed the theology of Jacobus Arminias. They were referred to as ‘Arminians’. Later this theology became the basis for the modern Methodist church. As far back as Dr. Samuel Fargo we know that the Fargos were members of the Methodist Church and very devout. Thus, I submit that the vessel that carried Moses and Aaron Fargo to the New World was most likely ‘Arminia’ or the ‘Arminian’. Although I cannot provide proper documentation for my comments I submit them for your interest. Robert married Sarah Camp on 22 Jul 1724 in New London, Conn.. Sarah was born in 1700 in New London, CT. She was the daughter of William Camp and Elizabeth Smith. Samuel Fargo - He is the son of Moses Fargo Jr. and Elizabeth Camp. Samuel married Mary. Mary was born in 1712/1713. She died on 10 Feb 1803 . (Sources: - 3) Samuel - Fargo Family in   West street is located on the old Tyringham road. Most of the citizens now, and nearly all the first settlers, were good, substantial farmers. This precinct formerly embraced Chestnut Hill, which was set off to Monterey a few years since. The Fargos, Jabez, Samuel, Moses and Ezekiel, settled in that section; also Aaron Heath.   Samuel Fargo, sen. came from New London, Conn., was a shoemaker, then farmer. He had seven children. Samuel Fargo, jr., born September 1st, 1779, was married January 30th, 1822, to Eliza Buel. He engaged in mercantile pursuits, first in Monterey, next in Tyringham, and in 1855 moved to Dixon, Ill., and is still living. Two of his sons, Edward and James B., are in Dixon, Ill. Charles H. and Samuel W. are in Chicago. All of them are manufacturers and dealers in boots and shoes, and do a business exceeding $1,000,000 annually. Robert Fargo Jr - was born about 1725 in Montville, New London, Conn and died on 10 Apr 1794 in Montville, New London, Conn and was buried in Congdon Cemetery, Colchester, Conn . He was the son of Robert Fargo Sr. and Sarah Camp. Robert married Prudence Stanton on 1 Jul 1756 in New London, Conn.. Prudence was born about 1734. She was the daughter of Thomas Stanton. She died on 19 Jul 1818 and was buried in Congdon Cemetery, Colchester, Conn . Robert - He was called Elder, and was a Baptist Preacher in the old Morse Church, (later called the Elder Palmer Church)   On a tombstone erected to the memory of a son of that great grandfather in the cemetery in the town of Montville, Conn., (New London Co.) is the following:   "Deacon Robert Fargo Died April 10th 1794 Ages 69 years". Hence he was born in the year 1725. He resided in the Town of Montville, was a farmer by occupation and Deacon of the Rev. Reuben Pulver (or Pulwers) Baptist Church, Montville... He had one brother and one sister." William Fargo Jr. - was born about 1757 in New London, Conn. and died on 14 Oct 1801 in Montville, Conn. . He was the son of William Fargo. William married Mary Congdill Sep 1784 in Lyme, Conn.. William - At the age of 17 he was among the first to enlist in the Revolutionary War. Was a trader and shipper of cattle and horses. Sgt in Rev War. (DAR Index) Grandfather of W.G. Nehemiah Fargo - was born on 10 Jan 1764 in Bozrah, Conn. and died on 13 Oct 1828 in Warsaw, Ny and was buried in Warsaw Village Pioneer Cemetery . He was the son of Robert Fargo Jr and Prudence Stanton. Nehemiah married Mary Chapman Jun 1783 in Montville, New London, Conn. Mary was born on 25 Dec 1764. She was the daughter of Alpheus Chapman. She died on 12 Dec 1839 in Warsaw, Ny. and was buried in Warsaw Village Pioneer Cemetery . Nehemiah - Lived in Montville, New London Co., Conn. for about ten years after they married. Then sucessively, at Colchester and Hebron, Conn., Sandesfield and Great Barrington, Mass. and Genesco, N.Y.   Came to Warsaw, NY in 1804 with his family and settled in the second house in Warsaw. where he resided until his death. From "A History of Wyoming County, New York"   Nehemiah Fargo went to Warsaw as one of the "founding fathers" in 1804. A son of his (Alpheus) drowned in the autumn of 1804 at the age of five. His was one of the first burials in Warsaw - on Main Street in what was commonly referred to as "the old burying ground". (This burying ground is now known as the Warsaw Village Pioneer Cemetery)]   He was a member of the Baptist Church.   Nehemiah bough land in 1803 from Jabish Warren - 214 acres lot 28. In 1824, Neh. donated $5.00 towards the purchase of the first Church Bell in Warsaw. It was replaced 35 years later with a larger bell. History of Wyoming County, N.Y   The Settlement of Warsaw - page 271-283 - excerpts   In 1803 a number of families and several young men settled in town. Three named Hovey came early in the spring, and they were followed in a few months by their father with five younger sons...   Mehemiah Fargo ... and others settled in the course of the first season.   The second death in the Warsaw, NY was that of a son of nehemiah Fargo, who was frowned in the Otaka creek, in the autumn of 1804, at age 5. His was the second burial in the :old burying ground" on the east side of Main street,   From 1848 to 1857 Benjamin F. Francis, jr., John M. David and Allen fargo were in trade under different firms.   In March 1850, the Warsaw Cemetery Association was formed and the following officers were elected; ... Allen Fargo.   Benjamin F. Fargo was secretary and treasurer of the Warsaw Gas Works in 1859.   David Fargo was chosed Trustee of the Warsaw Baptist Church in 1828. On his tombstone "He rests his body in the tomb, His soul on high with saints and angels blest. His Lord doth glorify. His hopes and faith are fled and now in rapture sweet." William married Stacy Strong on 10 Aug 1817. Stacy was born on 14 Sep 1799 in Hebron, Conn.. She died on 9 Nov 1870 and was buried in Buffalo, Ny. . William - Left Conn. in 1807 with Uncle John Ames to Plymouth and Jamesville, Conn. and finally Buffalo in Sep. 1809. He was a farmer and distiller. William - Formed an express company with Henry Wells in 1844. Married Anna H. Williams in 1840 - twelve children. William George Fargo   From the age of thirteen he had to support himself, obtaining little schooling, and for several years he was a clerk in grocery stores in Syracuse. He became a freight agent for the Auburn & Syracuse railway company at Auburn in 1841, an express messenger between Albany and Buffalo a year later, and in 1843 a resident agent in Buffalo. In 1844 he organized, with Henry Wells (1805-1878) and Daniel Dunning, the first express company (Wells & Co.; after 1845 Livingston & Fargo) to engage in the carrying business west of Buffalo.   The lines of this company (which first operated only to Detroit, via Cleveland) were rapidly extended to Chicago, St Louis, and other western points. In March 1850, when through a consolidation of competing lines the American Express Company was organized, Wells became president and Fargo secretary. In 1851, with Wells and others, he organized the firm of Wells, Fargo & Company to conduct an express business between New York and San Francisco by way of the Isthmus of Panama and on the Pacific coast, where it long had a virtual monopoly.   In 1861 Wells, Fargo & Co. bought and reorganized the Overland Mail Co., which had been formed in 1857 to carry the United States mails, and of which Fargo had been one of the original promoters. She was the daughter of William Whiting and Abigail Flowers. She died on 5 Dec 1867 in Fond du Lac, Wisc. and was buried in Rienzi Cemetery, Fond du Lac, WI . About six weeks ago he fell on the walk and recieved injuries that hastened his death.   But for that he might have lived several years - perhaps to be 100 years old. The funeral took place Tuesday, the service being preached by the Rev. Mr. Cowles. Mr Fargo lived to see his children's children's children's children. He has lived under the Administration of all Presidents. He was born before the Revolutionary war was over.   He was the father of Wm. N. Fargo, the Grandfather of Capt. W. A. Fargo, Matt and H.B. Oshkosh Daily Northwestern (Oshkosh, Wisconsin) > 1884 > April > 10   The police last night arrested Silas Fargo formerly of this city.   Fargo is charged with burglary at Fond Du Lac, it being alledged that he stole $95 in money and a certificate of deposits for $100 in favor of W. H. Pack.   Fargo was locked up over night and an officer from Fond du Lac came after him this morning. A man of determination   Uncle Silas, when in 91st year, told he was sent by his father when about 18 years old to Willink to the mill. It was June with an ox sled and two yoke of oxen, he started over the western hills. In some places a wood road was to be found; in others none. Arriving at what is now Varysburg, the Tonawanda was so swollen by recent rains that he could not ford it and keep the load dry. After repeated soundings he found a place where he could cross if his sled was a good foot higher. The box that held the load being about 16 inches deep. He unloads, reverses the box, puts the load on top and crosses and then the unloading and loading must be done as the unevenness of the road would not admit his proceeding in safety without. David Fargo - was born on 31 Oct 1786 in Montville, Conn. and died on 16 May 1855 in Warsaw, Ny. . He was the son of Nehemiah Fargo and Mary Chapman. David married Bethiah Day on 9 Sep 1810 in Warsaw, Ny. Bethiah was born Feb 1793. She died on 11 May 1814 .   Then David married Phebe Mason on 9 Oct 1864. She died on 21 Jan 1850 in Warsaw, Ny. . David - Resided on a farm 1 1/2 miles north of Warsaw. Deacon of the Baptist Church, later united with the Congregational Church.   Mr.. FARGO was a farmer at what was then known as the Four Corners, in the town of Warsaw. Here most of his life was spent, and here were born his ten children, of whom six sons and two daughters reached maturity. FARGO left the district school at eighteen, and studied for two terms at the Wyoming Academy, after which he learned the trade of wool-carding and cloth-dressing under his brother-in-law, Mr.. Chauncey Kimball. In 1839 he went to Springville, Erie County, where he was employed in the cloth factory owned by E.W. COOK, in which firm he became a partner two years later.   He came to Warsaw from Springville in 1849, and engaged in mercantile business with his brother Francis F. Fargo, under the firm name of F. F. Fargo and Co., which in 1851 was changed to B. F. Fargo & Co., Francis F. FARGO leaving the business, and his father David Fargo, and his uncle, Allen Fargo, entering the firm. When the father died, in 1855, Benjamin F. FARGO became sole owner of the business and added thereto trade in country produce, which he bought in the neighborhood and shipped to new York City.   In 1870 he built the brick block at No. 21 Main Street which has been occupied by the printing offices of the Democratic Organ of Warsaw. After using part of this building for a year, Mr.. Fargo leased it for a term of five years to James E. BISHOP at five hundred dollars per year, retaining the upper floor for offices. In 1876 he again used this building as a grocery store, which he conducted for ten years, finally giving it up to the management of his son, Charles H. Fargo, who had been his salesman and book-keeper. Mr. FARGO now devotes himself to collecting, and besides holding the office of School Collector is very successful in urging claims for the merchants of the vicinity.   He was married in Springville, September 11, 1841, to Miss Maria L. BLOOMFIELD (Sources: - 17 - 11) v.  Darius C. Fargo Darius - Married Harriet Perkins and moved to California. - Town children. vi.  Myron L. Fargo Myron - Married Mary Smith, daughter of Henry W. Smith of Middlebury, NY. One son. vii.  Francis F. Fargo Francis - Married Mariett Perry, daughter of Jonathan Perry of Middlebury. Moved to California where Francis Fargo was a newspaper editor and member of the legislature. Two children, Eva and Gertrude.   In 1848 Benjamin F. Fargo and his brother, Francis F. Fargo commenced th emercantile business in Warsaw, NY. About a year later, John M. Fargo, son of Allen Fargo becamse a partner and the firm was changed to B. F. Fargo & Co. In 1851, F. F. and John having retired, David and Allen came into the concern, then name emaining unchanged. In 1857, the firm was dissolved and the dry goods business discontinued. B. F. Allen Fargo - was born on 4 Apr 1802 in Great Barrington, Mass. and died on 26 Dec 1888 in Warsaw, NY . He was the son of Nehemiah Fargo and Mary Chapman. Allen married Polly Marchant on 30 Oct 1822. Polly was born on 17 Dec 1800. She was the daughter of Joseph Marchant and Polly Cammet. She died on 3 May 1863 . Allen - Allen was appointed a trustee of the Warsaw cemetery in 1847. He was elected to the Warsaw Cemetery Association in March 1850 when it became necessary to enlare the "old burying ground". The trustees bought and laid out the lot of R. R> Munger, on the west side of the road, opposite the ole burying ground on Main street. The new cemetery was dedicated on the 7th of September, 1850. They photographed Mark Twain and Henry David Thoreau, to name a few.   He and Francis Kellogg Dunshee were daguerreians in 1850 in Taunton, Mass.1563 ,1564 He was a photographer in 1877 in Woburn, MA.1565 He lived in 1878 in Boston, MA.1566. Fargo died in 1883 in Berlin . William married Rachel H. Beaver. Rachel was born Oct 1846 in Bristol, Trumbull County, Ohio. She died on 20 Feb 1892 in Milwaukee, Wi . Rachel - RACHEL H. FARGO   Died in Milwaukee, Thursday Feb. 20th, at 5 p.m. at the hospital where she was undergoing an operation for cancer, Rachel H. Fargo, widow of Captain W.A. Fargo, of Fond du Lac, and mother of Mrs. William Shambeau of this place, aged 55 years.   Rachel H., daughter of Colonel Edward Beaver, was born in Bristol, Trumbull County, Ohio, Oct. 1846. She was married in Fond du Lac in 1863 to Captain Wm. A. Fargo, who died in Berlin in 1883. Five children survive her, three sons, Edward B. of Mattoon, Wis., Wm. H. of St. Paul, Minn., Robert L. of Hot Springs, Ark., and two daughters, Mrs. Wm. Shambeau of Marion, Wis. and Mrs. Floyd Chaney Jr. of Chicago, all of whom attended the funeral.   The pall bearers were Jno. Chitterling. M. Lesselyoung, Samuel Hotaling, and James Dunn, all members of Capt. Fargo's Company, and G.A.R. men. The funeral was held from the residence of M.V. Fargo, of Fond du Lac at ten a.m. Monday, Rev. H.W. Thompson officiating. Remains were entered in the Rienzi Cemetery by the side of her husband. The floral offerings were profuse and elegant.   Mrs. Fargo during her residence in Marion made many warm friends who mourn her loss. She was a charter member of the Marion Relief Corps, who sent their tribute of loves in a bouqet of lillies. The ADVERTISER extends its sympathies to the bereaved friends.
