Archibald Douglass - was born in 1665 and died on 29 Feb 1728 in Kent, Delaware . Archibald - from: Chanceford Twp.,York,PA written by June Grove   "Lord Archibald Douglass (1665-1728) had two daughters and five sons Thomas(1690-1757); Archibald (1695-1756);James (1697-1757);Andrew(1702-1747);and William (1700-1740), who moved to Ireland and had one son,William Douglas II (1725-1797). Around 1726 Lord Archibald chartered a ship and brought his family, close friends, and possessions and landed at New Castle,Delaware. When his father died,William II came to live with an uncle. William married Elizabeth Matthews (1730-1820) on June 21, 1753 at Christ Lutheran Church in York and lived in Chanceford Township. Their children were David, Mary, Richard, Martha, Elizabeth, William Douglas III, John, James, Mary, and Rebecca."   The sources listed are Steven Douglas and Phyllis Douglas Hoffman email from Barbara Douglas Stinson - April 2007   Further research on Lord Archibald Douglass indicates that he probably left Scotland to oversee lands in Northern Ireland. He was Anglican in religion. He was born near Edinburgh,Scotland. I have also found a death date on him of Feb. 29,1728 in Kent, Delaware. He apparently left Scotland after his brother,John ,was killed in the Scottish skirmishes. He turned his Scottish property over to his sister who was married to Lord Hone. His daughters were: Margaret-Born 1685 who married Conrad Bacher Rutter,Mary-born 1704-1792 who married John Gibson, Ann-1706 who married John Caldwell, and Jane-1708 who married James Wilson,Jr. this last is from information researched by the former Covener of Clan Douglas in Oregon. So obviously there is a discrepancy in the number of daughters that he had.   Hope this will be a help to you. William married Elizabeth MATTHEWS, MARTHERS on 21 Jun 1753 in Christ Luthern Church, York, PA. Elizabeth was born about 1733. She died on 11 Sep 1827 in Chanceford Twp. age 94 . William - This info is from a Biographical Sketch of Richard Township, Clinton County, Ohio.   William Douglass' Will mentions to his son-in-laws William Long, James Cunnungham, James Long, Robert Buckhannan and William Adams. Sampson Douglass - was born in 1813. He is the son of David D. Douglass Capt and Jean (Jane) BUCHANAN. Sampson married Mary Beeson. Mary was born on 25 Sep 1820 in Ohio. She died on 20 May 1856 in Peru, Indiana and was buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery . Mary - "Her father was Richard Beeson, born April 28, 1788 and her mother was Nancy Cain, born August 12, 1783. She was one of six children. Her Great-great Grandfather, Richard Beeson, was a Quaker Minister and was instrumental in the Quaker movement in Guilford County, NC.during the 1750s.   "Mary Beeson Douglass either divorced or Sampson died, for she married William Berry on Jan. 1, 1854 in Peru, Miami , Indiana. She died May 20, 1856 in Peru and is buried in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Peru, Indiana. Her grave is unmarked." Elizabeth - was the daughter of Panina (Bemina)-b. 1804,and Zachariah Daulby-B. 1794, who moved to Peru from Ohio. They had originally come from North Carolina. Elizabeth had three brothers and three sisters.All three brothers served in the Civil War with the Indiana Units. (email from Barbara Stinson Oct 2005) Rayburn - Elizabeth and Rayburn Douglass had four children:   Melvin Douglas-b. 1861 in Peru,   William SheridanDouglas and Wilson Sherman Douglas-b. Jan. 17, 1865 in Peru, and   Winona Douglas-b. 1868 in Peru.   By 1880, the family had left Indiana and were found in Joplin, MO. They then left Missouri and moved to Oswego, Labette, KS. I have no further information on Melvin.   Winona married a Talbert and moved to Seattle, Washington where she died in 1942.   Wilson stayed in Oswego and died Feb. 5, 1937.   William Sheridan Douglas married Lena Pearl Gilmore -b. May 8, 1871 in Litchfield,IL ,d. May 23,1901Monett,MO) and Margaret Tiller (Fannie),b.1850,d.-July 8, 1883(Litchfield,IL.)   Lena Douglas divorced William Sheridan Douglas and died in Riverside CA in 1947 .   Lena Gilmore (Douglas) was the daughter of Harvey M. Gilmore-B. Aug. 1, 1836 and D.-May 23, 1901, and Margaret (Fannie) Tiller-B. 1850-D. William married Sarah. Sarah was born about 1814 in Pa. She died on 22 Jan 1884 and was buried in Chanceford Prebyterian Ch. . Andrew A. Nathanial DOUGLASS - was born in 1850 in York Co., Pa and died in 1887 in Emerson, Dixon Co., NE and was buried in Hill Side Cmt., Emerson, Mills, IA . He was the son of William C. DOUGLASS. Andrew married Sarah Jane BORDEN in 1857 in Stirling, Hastings Co., ONT, Canada. Sarah was born on 14 Mar 1836 in Belleville, Ontario. She was the daughter of William Lloyd Borden and Mary Jane Douglass. She died on 13 Jul 1927 in Douglass, Buttler Co., KS 87y 6m 25d . Sarah -   'Sarah Jane Borden was born in Belleville, Ontario, Canada, May 19, 1857 and died at her home, four miles northwest of Douglass Kansas, July 13, 1927, being at that time, 70 years, 1 month, and 24 days of age.   'When a child five years of age, her parents moved to Peoria, Illinois, where she grew to womanhood. She then moved to Emerson, Iowa, where she was married to Andrew Douglas in 1877. She and her husband moved to Emerson, Nebraska, where he died December 8, 1887.   'On October 2, 1889 she was married to James W. Woods. They lived in Emerson, Nebraska several years, then moved in 1905, according to journal entry by John Lester Douglas to Belleville, Republic County Kansas, where they made their home until they came to Douglass Butler County, Kansas in 1909. After about a year spent here in town they moved out to the farm where the remainder of her life was spent.   'Her husband, James Woods, died January 20, 1917.   'Sister Woods was the mother of eight children, three by the first marriage and five by the last. Her first child, Albert Douglas, died in 1919. Those living are: Frank A. Douglas, Superior, Nebr.; John L. Douglas, Belleville, Kans.; Archie Woods, Amerillo, Texas; Mrs. Mary Hartenbower, Mrs. Eva Wakefield and Bryan Woods of Douglass, Kansas and Mrs. Gladys Preston of Wichita. Besides the children mentioned in this sketch she leaves to mourn her departure, four step-children--Mrs. Maud Isascs, P. J. and Ernest Woods and Mrs. Lucy Guthrie, all of Douglas, Kansas. She also leaves one sister, Mrs. Ida Young, of Almena, Kansas.   'Sister Woods was a church member all her life. She was first a member of the Episcopalian church, then the Presbyterian church and for about 25 years, the Methodist Episcopal church.' Edna - John Lester Douglas first married Bessie Katherine Goodwin's elder sister Edna Anna Goodwin. they had two children.
