When he was eighteen, Plymouth had been settled fifty years but ravenous animals abounded in the Colony. In 1654, nineteen wolves were killed. Joseph could set a trap as cunningly as the oldest Indians. Wolf Neck, so named because it was the resort of these animals, was about 1/2 mile from Joseph's home, and there he set his traps. Once he narrowly escaped losing his life. Seeing a large wolf in his trap, he approached with a rotten pile pole in his hand. He struck, the pole broke, and the caged beast sprang at him with the trap and chain attached to his leg. Mr. Bodfish escaped, but the trap is preserved as a family heirloom. It is said that the last wolf killed in Barnstable was killed by Joseph Bodfish
