Arthur Bevin - was born before 1650 in Yate, Gloucester Co., England and died on 15 Dec 1697 . Arthur married Mary in 1675. Mary was born before 1660. She died on 18 Dec 1712 in Middleton, Conn. . Arthur - Lived in W. Tisbury, Martha's Vineyard, Mass at least from 1677-1696. Moved to Glastonbury, Conn about 1696.   "Family tradition has it that four brothers who wrote their name BEVENS or BEVINS came to this country landing first at Martha's Vineyard from whence they went to Glastonbury (Conn)" - History of Ancient Windham.   BEVENS is a Welch contraction of AP EVANS or Ivan the son of John.   An Arthur BEVIN lived in the parish of Yate, Co. Arthur Bibbins - was born on 12/28 Apr 1686 and died Feb 1788 . He was the son of Arthur Bevin. Arthur married Experience Cornwell in 1705. Experience was born on 14 Apr 1682 in W. Tisbury, Mass.. She was the daughter of William Cornwell and Mary Bull. She died on 17 May 1730 in Windham, Conn. .   Then Arthur married Elizabeth Eames on 26 May 1731. She died Feb 1768 . Arthur - Settled in Windham before 1714. Lived to age 102. Before that he lived in Glastanbury, Conn. Virtually all the BIBBINS's in America are descended from Arthur who changed his name from BEVIN to BIBBINS about 1700. Church records say he lived to be 108.   He is represented to have been a man of great vigor and health, never sick a day until after he was 100 when he was thrown from a horse and injured, after which he was confined until his death. Ebenezer - married a Susanna., child Timothy Bibbins, who married Eunice Brewster, and Susanna Bibbins who married Caleb Conant, Jr. of Mansfield.   There is an Ebenezer Bibbins of Salisbury who married Hulda Sedgwick of Farmington, daughter of Stephen, June 1, 1769. Patience Bibbins - was born on 23 Oct 1733. She is the daughter of Arthur Bibbins Jr. and Abigail Follett. Patience married Mannassah Farnum Jr on 19 Apr 1758. Mannassah was born on 27 Jun 1739 in Windham Windham CT. Patience - married Mannassah Farnum of Ashford. Children: i.  Elizabeth Farnum was born on 17 Nov 1773. Elizabeth married Bela Bibbins on 29 May 1796 in Windham, Conn. Congregational Church. Bela was born in Windham, Conn.. He was the son of William Bibbins and Louisa Simons. He died after 1840 . Samuel Bibbins - was born on 12 Dec 1742 in Windham, Conn. and died about ___ 10 1805 . He was the son of Arthur Bibbins Jr. and Abigail Follett. Samuel married Deboreh Fasset Cleveland in 1765. Deboreh was born on 27 Oct 1747 in Pomfret, Ct. Samuel -   Samuel moved from Litchfield CT to Hampton NY in 1774 and apparently was the first male Bibbins to move out of CT in 80 years. His home (no longer standing) was on what is still known as Bibbins Hill. He served at least 2 terms in the Revolutionary War, the first from 8-21-77 to 10-21-77 as a private in Capt Enoch Noble's Berkshire Co MA Regiment and marched to Manchester VT, Allinton and Stillwater NY where he participated in the victory over Gen. Burgoyne. He later enlisted 10-15-80 serving with Col John Ashley's Regiment for 3 days at the time Ft Edward and Ft Ann were captured by the British.   In 1788 Samuel and Deborah hosted a meeting of two Methodist circuit riders , Lemuel Smith and Samuel Wigden, from Saratoga leading to the expansion of the church into the Hampton area with their active assistance. 2 of his sons, 2 grandsons and at least one great-grandson became Methodist ministers. Samuel also served a Hampton Commissioner of Schools in 1796. He was listed in the 1800 census but not in 1810.   His date of death is unknown but The History of Fair Haven VT says "Samuel was said to be a resident of Fair Haven in 1809".   Widow Deborah associated with Methodist church in Stillwater 1811 - lv next door to Thos Armstrongs in 1830 (Butler NY)   Resources: Samuel Bibbins Family Notes (courtesy Charles Bibbins - 2004)   listed in DAR index - Pvt from Mass. William married Louisa Simons on 23 Apr 1709 in Windham County, CT. Louisa was born in 1744. She was the daughter of Nathan Simons. She died on 20 Dec 1806 and was buried in Windham Center Cemetery . Israel Bibbins - was born on 18 Jan 1747 and died on 15 Jun 1822 in Fairfield, Conn. and was buried in Old Burial Ground, Fairfield, CT . He was the son of Arthur Bibbins Jr. and Abigail Follett. Israel married Hannah Silliman. Hannah was born about 1745. She died on 7 Aug 1819 and was buried in Old Cemetery, Fairfield,Ct . (Sources: - 15) Israel - married Hannah Silliman, dau. of Nathaniel Silliman, born Jan 23 1744/5, died Aug 7, 1819 - 7 Children.   Was apvt - under Capt David Dimon - 7 days svc - in the Revolutionary war. (Connecticut Men in the Revolutionary War)   Their son Nathaniel Silliman Bibbins was bapstised Jan 18, 1778 at Christ's Church if Fairfield. Luther Bibbins - was born on 24 Jan 1771 in Litchfield, CT. He is the son of Samuel Bibbins and Deboreh Fasset Cleveland. Luther married Hannah Perkins. Hannah was born on 11 Feb 1771 in Wallingford, New Haven, Connecticut. She was the daughter of Moses Perkins and Mary Smith. She died on 3 Jan 1809 in Warsaw, New York . (Sources: - 20) Luther - in 1800 lived in Hampton NY with wife, 2 sons under 10, 2 daughters under 10, 1 daughter 10-16. from email from Charles Bibbins Oct 18, 2002   We do not currently have firm proof of the relationship between Luther Bibbins, Samuel Bibbins, Lucy Bibbins and Smith Bibbins, but there is strong circumstantial evidence that Luther was the father of the other 3.   Samuel was the nephew of Luther's brother Calvin per Samuel's pension file. The children of all other brothers except William are fully known. Samuel lived next door to Luther in 1820 in Salina NY and both were in Salem MI in the 1830-40 timeframe. Luther apparently lv in Fair Haven VT in 1796 but was in NY in 1800 census and Fair Haven again in 4/1805 "in the old house which stood on the common" per History of Fair Haven. In the 1830 census Luther Bibbee (sic) lv in Ossian NY - age 60-70 with 1 m 30-40, 1 m 20-30, 1 f 60-70, 1 f 20-30, 1 f 10-15. They lived next door to Alonzo Bibbee age 30-40 + family (a name I don't know)   Samuel's son Elisha was born in Warsaw NY in 1823. Smith was married there in 1824. Lucy lived there after her marriage to Rufus Morris in the early 20's until her death in 1852. Warsaw was founded by a man from Hampton in 1803 when Luther and his family still lived there. Other tie ins:   - Lucy's great-granddaughter believed Lucy's father was Luther born 1771 whose wife was Hannah, but she did not know the source.   - A later source verified that his wife was Hannah Perkins, whose mother was Mary Smith and speculated that Smith Bibins was named after his grandmother. Members of this Perkins family also moved to Beloit, Wisc.   - One of Smith's descendents speculated that he was the son of Luther.   - Smith's first son was named Silas Luther. Smith's wife's father was Silas Fargo.   - Lucy's eldest son was named Luther.   We are thus assuming this father plus 3 (or more) sibling relationship. Arthur Bibbins - was born on 28 Oct 1779 in Hampton, Ny and died on 14 Mar 1862 in Rodman, NY . He was the son of Samuel Bibbins and Deboreh Fasset Cleveland. He died on 17 Jan 1874 in Rodman, NY . Harry - was a farmer,   He was the chid of Anson Moody and Cadance Carpenter.   He was a Royal Arch Mason. In 1850, he was living at Orleans, N.Y. (Census of 1850). In 1852 he moved to Pulaski and settled on a farm not far from the village.   His will dated Dec. 27, 1873, was probated March 9, 1874 (Oswego Col. Wills Liber L:224). In it he devised all his estate to his wife Caroline Ann Moody for life. After her death the estate was to be divided, one tenth to his three grandchildren, Belle, Frank, and Harry Anson, children of his late son Anson Moody, on attaining their majority, and all the rest to his children.   He appointed his wife Caroline Ann and his son Arthur Bibbins his executors. He was the son of Samuel Bibbins and Deboreh Fasset Cleveland. Elisha married Alice Lathrop on 20 Sep 1814. Alice was born on 8 May 1791 in Lisbon, Connecticut. She died Jan 1877 in Newark (KENDALL) Illinois . Alice -   ALICE, born in Lisbon, Massachusettsy 8, 1791, and married, Sept. 20, 1814, Rev. Elisha Bibbins, a Methodist preacher, and now living with her son, J. S. Bibbins, in Neward, Ill. She has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church sixty-five years. Mr. Bibbins was born in Hamden, N. ., July 16, 1790, and after successfully laboring in the ministry for years, went into Illinois, in 1840, and was in 1843 sent to the State legislature. On a visit to Scranton, Pa., for the purpose of meeting his old friends and recruiting his health, died very suddenly while sitting in his chair.   Their children are all members of the Methodist Church, and are as follows: Edward Paine Bibbins, born May 16, 1815, and is a farmer; Joseph Slocum Bibbins, born Nov. 1, 1821, in Newark, Kendall County, Ill.; Robert Kendall Bibbins, born Apr. 21, 1823, and is a Methodist preacher; Andrew Tracy Lothrop Bibbins, born Aug. 12, 1826, and died in infancy; Tracy Lothrop Bibbins, born Aug. 12, 1829, and is a dealer in real estate. "At the time of his death he was visiting his old friend Dr. George Peck. After an afternoon and evening spent in charming conversation he retired at ten o’clock. While frail, nothing unusual or alarming was noticed in his condition. Before the dawn of another Day He was gone. Samuel brought nearly half of the membership of his Northville church with him. In 1867 Samuel and Elisha Bibbins and 5 other ministers rejoined the Conf in an emotional ceremony.   lv Salina NY 1820, likely Warsaw NY 1823, Salem MI 1828*, Plymouth MI 1839-1856, Romulus MI 1856 until his death - he bought several properties in Romulus 1856-60 (he also listed residences in Ida and Ontonagon MI) * 1828 date not certain - not listed in 1830 MI census. A Samuel Bivens listed in Middlesex, Yates Co. NY in 1830 census with children of the applicable age. A Rev "Charles" Bibbins was listed as the minister of the 2nd Methodist Church of Potter, Yates Co in 1829 in some anniversary publications. Potter is next to Middlesex. Seeley sold it to Elisha 3-30-1859 v.  Rowland L Bibbins was born in 1823 in NY and died on 29 Jun 1861 and was buried in Thayler Cem, Northville, MI . Rowland - lived alone in Ann Arbor MI in 1850 and in Nankin Twp MI in 1860.   There is only circumstantial evidence that Rowland is Samuel's son, but he certainly appears to have had close ties to James W m Eleanor C Winans 9-27-1853 in the Dutch Reformed Church of Coxsackie NY who was b 1824 NY - it would seem that she met Rowland in MI but chose to get married in her home town Rowland and Eleanor bought property in Romulus Twp 1-19-1860 with Elisha Bibbins as witness.   In 1870 and 1880 censuses and 1886 city directory for Ann Arbor Eleanor and unmarried Ada lived together - Ada b 1856 MI. Caroline - Census: Woodstock, Lenawee County, MI 1850 Joel Russ     (indexed incorrectly as "Rugh"] Mary Russ 26 born NY Mary is the sister of Caroline Cook Caroline Bibbins 21 born NY   Caroline Cook   (The following obituary of Mrs Caroline Bibbins was printed in a 1904 edition of the report of the Detroit Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. I have copies of several other obits from these publications including that of Rev Elijah and his father Rev Samuel. - Charlie Bibbins)   "Caroline Cook was born in Cattaraugus County, NY April 26, 1829 and died in Ypsilanti, Mich, Oct 9, 1904. Left an orphan at an early age, her young girlhood was spent with several families of this word and a few others are unclear on my copy. In 1849 she came to Lenawee County in this state to live with an older sister. During the next year she was blessedly converted and in 1851 was happily united in marriage with the Rev. Elisha Bibbins under whose ministry she had been led into christian and life. Twenty four years of arduous service in the ministry followed, sixteen years in the Wesleyan Methodist and eight in the Methodist Episcopal Church.   Sister Bibbins was a faithful servant of God. Domestic duties had not permitted to absorb her entire time. She delighted to engage in the work of the church and many souls were led into the religion or encouraged in the conflict of life by her sweet sympathy and unselfish devotion to their welfare. She diligently studied the work and read it through by course seven times.   Being persuaded through the Bible of her high privileges in she trusted in God for entire sanctification and became a shining witness of the fullness of grace. About the end of August, last year Sister Bibbins suffered a stroke of paralysis. In her afflictions she exhibited much patience and was richly sustained by faith and } into rest. Funeral services were held at the home of her son Wednesday morning Oct 12, 1904 and the remains were taken to Romulus, Mich, and interred by the side of her husband, Rev Geo[ of Milan, officiating."   (I also found her listed as Caroline Bibbins in the 1850 Cambridge MI census. I don't know how to reconcile this with the obituary although it is plausible that she and Elijah were engaged at that time and she was so excited about the upcoming marriage that she gave her future surname to the census taker. Elijah's obit in this publication did not mention her much less their marriage date.) Elisha - was a Methodist Minister in Detroit for many years. Adney F. Bibbins - was born on 28 Mar 1832 in Warsaw, Ny and died on 5 Jan 1863 in Danville, Ky and was buried in Danville National Cemetery - Plot: 32, 0, 124 . He was the son of Smith Bibbins and Angeline H. Fargo. Adney married Lydia Wheatstone on 1 Feb 1857 in Beloit, Wi. Lydia was born about 1833 in New York. Lydia - after Adney died in 1863, Lydia and the children lived with Silas Bibbins in 1870, next door to Andrew Myers and his wife Lydia. Later Lydia and Andrew married. Adney - occupation: Miller in Beloit, Wi. - was a Sawyer in Beloit in 1858, a Miller in 1862. He was the first Bibbins in Beloit, with Smith and the others moving there later. Adney died in the Civil War as evidenced by a photo inscription - "Grandpa Bibbins' brother who died in the war" and a picture of a soldier labeled "Uncle Adney Bibbins" and a listing on the Veterans Memorial in Beloit. At age 12 he took a wagon train to SD, tried homesteading, then went to CA and finally to WA.   Frank Bibbins (came to Vashon 1884) began the first regular daily service to Quartermaster Harbor with the steamer "Sophia" - 42 ft long - two daily trips - stops at Yacht Club Boat House (Manzanita), Dry Dock (Dockton), Burrow's Landing? Bleeker's Brickyard (Burton Governor’s Row), Hatch's Saw Mill (Assembly Point Burton Peninsula) "The brickyards and mill made considerable business for the little steamer..." Bibbins served the Harbor for 18 years - with the "Sophia" 1890-1899 and then the "Norwood" (Vashon-Maury Timeline by Dr. Bruce Haulman Web: } (http://www.vashonhistory.com/vashontimeline.htm)   In 1905 he was a co-founder, with Arthur Hunt, of Burton Navigation Co. He sold his interest in 1912 to Arda Hunt and LLoyd Hunt. Vashon (steamer)   Capt. Chance Wiman, who had purchased a half interest in the steamer Sophia from W. H. Biobins in 1894, bought out all his partner's interest in the firm of Wiman & Bibbins In 1904. It was understood that Biobins would retire from the steamboat business.   Biobins joined forces with A. M. Hunt to form the Tacoma & Burton Navigation Co., taking delivery of the new 93-foot steamer Burton from Crawford & Reid and placing her on an identical schedule with the Vashon. One of the most spirited and bitter rivalries in the history of Sound steamboating ensued. Rate wars, races and collisions were the order of the day. Catherine married Worthington Luce on 18 Aug 1860 in Mt. Morris, Livingston, Ny. Worthington was born on 30 Sep 1834 in Ossian, NY. He was the son of William Henry Luce and Diantha Colwell. He died on 19 Sep 1864 and was buried in Woods Cmty, Ossian NY . Worthington - died on Sept 19 1864 six weeks before his son was born. Worthington Luce was in the New York infantry during the Civil War and died of throat diseases and chronic diarrhea resulting from war. (Sources: - 44)   Then Catherine married Henry Francis Hatch on 7 Feb 1872. Henry was born on 20 Oct 1834. He died on 16 Apr 1912 in Beloit, WI and was buried in Beloit, WI . Francis Eugene Bibbins Sr - was born on 3 Dec 1855 in Ossian, Benington Co., Ny and died on 23 Dec 1928 in Delphi, Ind and was buried in Oakwood Cmty, Beloit, Wisc . He was the son of Smith Bibbins and Angeline H. Fargo. Francis married Mary O'Holloran on 29 Jan 1881 in Beloit, Wisc.. Mary was born on 8 Apr 1863 in Clinton, Rock Co., WI. She was the daughter of Edward Holloran and Bridgett Doran. She died on 16 Nov 1942 in Lafayette, Ind and was buried in Oakwood Cmty, Beloit, Wisc . Mary - Obituary - Nov 16 1942   Mrs. Mary Bibbins, 79, widow of Francis Bibbins, Sr., died early today at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred S. Hencke, 828 S. Seventh St., Lafayette, ind., where she had made her home for five years.   She was born April 8, 1863, in Clinton, Wis. She was married to Mr. Bibbins Jan 29, 1880. In 1898 they moved to Delphi, Ind., where Mr. Bibbins was superintendent of the water works for may years. He died about 15 years ago.   Mrs. Bibbins was a member of the Baptist church at Delphi and of the O.E.S. and Pythians Sisters there.   She leaves one son, Dr. Francis Bibbins, Indianapolis, Ind., and one daughter, Mrs. Hencke, and two grand children, Eugene B. Bibbins, who is stationed at Fort Sill, Okla, and Mrs. Ruth Bibbins Hart, Chicago.   Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Rosman-Uehling-Kinzer chapel. The Rev. William P. She lived in West Lafayette, Ind and was active in the church - playing the organ - and took care of herself until she became ill in about 1970.   Fred and Bessie owned two homes in Lafayette. One was a good-sized house in Lafayette, on 10th St.,That was where Fred and Bessie lived. At some time, Fred bought another house in West Lafayette, across the river, and up near Purdue, at 487 Littleton St.. This house was used as a source of investment income, and rented out. After Fred died, Bessie sold the larger home and moved into the home at 487 Littleton, until just before her death.   There is an entry in the Lafayette Journal and Courier Index for their marriage: Bibbins, Bessie & Fred S. Schuyler married Louise Mary Burnam on 26 Sep 1865 in Burrville. Louise was born on 20 Sep 1840. She died on 19 Aug 1924 . Mott, she is listed as May Adelia Bibbins, daughter of Schuyler H. and Louisa Mary Burnham Bibbins of Burrville, NY and sister of Dr. Charles N. Bibbons of Watertown who died Feb. 7, 1887.   May Adelia died at 532 South Hamilton Street Watertown, NY on March 2, 1934. She had 3 children. Evelyn Anna Mott died July 6, 1890. The 2 sons were Hubert L. Mott (1897-12 May 1976) of Nyack, NY and Earl C. Mott of E. Rockaway, NY. email from Charles Bibbins Jan 27, 2003   Dad, who worked on our family genealogy for 30 years before I got interested, grew up in Watertown and knew May and Frederick Thurston Mott well. I am comfortable with his assertion that her name was May Adelia which agrees with the tombstone.   I never met her because she died before I was 2, but I did meet Fred a few times, knew their son Hubert well and had Hubert's daughter Mary as a houseparty date at Cornell one year. iii.  Harriet Ethel Bibbins was born on 6 Jun 1876 in Burrville and died on 8 Oct 1928 in Nyc .

Goetz and Thorson in April 1871. These gentlemen have gradually worked up a good trade and are now doing a good business. They keep an excellent stock of dry goods, groceries and provisions, constantly on hand, which they are selling at very low prices.   These gentlemen have their respective offices of County Auditor and County Recorder in the back part of the store room, where they keep the various books of the County belonging to their offices, and which require their attention a considerable portion of the time. The funeral was held at 10:30 a.m. today from the home. Rev. M. W. Halverson, of Our Savior's Lutheran church officiated and burial was made in Oakwood cemetery where the Modern Woodmen of which the deceased was a member, conducted the ritual service.   Mr. Bibbens was born west of Beloit on July 13, 1855 and had been a lifelong resident of Belout and vicinity. According to Mr. Bullock the driver cut across close to the curbinb and he stepped back just in time to avoid being knocked down. The fender of the car scraped the buttons of his coat. He was the son of Silas Luther Bibbins and Adelia Ann "Delia" Wheatstone. Louis married Eliza Kemmett on 16 May 1892 in Janesville, Wisc.. Eliza was born on 3 Jul 1869 in Janesville, WI. She died on 1 Nov 1928 in Beloit, WI . Eliza - Both parents were born in Ireland. A brother and sister attended her wedding in 1892.   Then Louis married Flora Bell Cox. Flora was born in 1882. She died in 1957 and was buried in Eastlawn Cemetery, Beloit . (Sources: - 10) Louis - occupation: Butcher - Butcher - first with Rupert Buckridge - a boarder at the Silas L. Bibbins household in 1880 (Census) and then at the firm Rouse and Bibbins, then with Bibbins and Carroll at 116 E. Grand in Beloit. There is some confusion between Louis Bibbins and a Lorey L. Bibbins. Bibbins listed his birthdate as April 1882 in the 1900 Census.   We believe he may have chosen the name Sullivan, because there was a Father Sullivan in Beloit in the 1880s.   Frank Sullivan as a canal rider for the U S Reclamation Service in 1917 according to his Draft registration Card for WWI. Supposedly his father had placed him in a catholic school which he hated. He ran away from the school and his father returned him almost immediately. He ran away a second time and headed for Omaha where an uncle Silas had a meat cutting business. Silas told him to write his father for some money and they would go into business together. When he wrote his father he wrote back and told Frank to come back home and he would put him up in business. Frank said no, I've made my mind up and he headed west. Frank stated that he was born April 22, 1883, in Beloit, WI. When he married my grandmother Zetta Taylor they were married in Yreka, CA which was about a 2 or 3 day buggy ride from where they were living. There had to be a reason they did this. Frank stated on the marriage license that he was 35 years old (Dec 10, 1917) which would mean he was born in 1882. He also stated on the marriage license that his father was W. J. Sullivan born in Ireland, mother was Prisila Chrisman born in Pennsylvania.   Frank is on the 1930 census for Klamath County, Oregon, Dairy precinct. His son Joseph was born in Oregon prior to 1920. email from Charles Bibbins   Al -   Dan Sullivan's thought that Arthur C Bibbins changed his name to Frank James Sullivan is very plausible. Arthur was Charles Wesley Bibbins and Priscilla Crissman Bibbins' 2nd child - born 1882. They subsequently had a son born 3-4 years later who died before age 2. They then had a daughter born 1887 or 1888 who became very ill.   Priscilla and Charles had become disenchanted with local doctors thus contacted a faith healer (Christian Science) and followed her advice which lead to the child dying from starvation. I have a copy of a highly critical front page article on this from the Beloit newspaper.   Charles was divorced by 1910, was an inmate in the Winnebago IL State Farm House in 1920, died in 1922 and was buried in the family plot - but in a section all by himself. It wouldn't surprise me if Priscilla and Charles had an acrimonious divorce, that she may have remarried and may have had enough distaste for her Bibbins background that she may have convinced Arthur to change his name to tie in with his step-father. I'd be interested to see what info Dan has on him to support this possibility.
