Robert Abell - was born in 1500 in Stapenhill, Derby, England. Robert married Helene in 1521. Robert - was named as of Stapenhill (Stapenhall) in the County of Derby, England, in a complaint of Walter Blount in about 1533. He is also mentioned in a 1547 deed. In the will of his son George, dated May 3, 1596, Robert is said to have been deceased.   Robert Abell was living in Bryslingcote, county Derby, in 1517. He was the servant or tenant of Sir William Gresley. Robert Abell - was born in 1531 in Derby and died on 17 May 1588 in Derby . He was the son of Robert Abell. Robert - was mentioned in the wills of his brother Anthony in 1559 and his brother George in 1596 as then deceased. His will is dated March 18, 1787/88, and was proved at London on May 17 of that year. In this will he gave to his only son George Abell “all the tithes of Ticknall and I appoint him sole executor.” His wife’s name is unknown. George Abell - was born about 1561 in Stapenhill, England and was buried on 13 Sep 1630 in Lockington, Leicester, England. He is the son of Robert Abell. George married Frances Cotton. Frances was born in 1573. She was the daughter of Richard Cotton and Mary Mainwaring. She died before 16 Apr 1646 . Frances -   There appears to be confusion over the mother of Frances Cotton. Some think that Jane Seyliard is her mother. The following presents the evidence that Mary Mainwaring is the correct mother:   The solution to the problem was presented by Thompson in his "The Genealogist" article. It is basically an argument by elimintation. I am a little fuzzy on the details (its been years), but if I recall correctly, the children of the firstwife were named in the will of her father, and the children of the third wife were named in her own will. Frances is named in neither of these, and thus is presumed to be daughter of the second wife, Mary Mainwaring. It is solid work. George - lived in Hemington in the Parish of Lockington in the County of Leicester, England. He was matriculated at the age of seventeen on December 8, 1578 at Brasenose College, Oxford. In 1581, he was admitted to the Inner Temple.   George was an attorney. He tried to get his son Robert a good job in London by having him become an apprentice there, but Robert chose to leave England and move to Massachusetts. George was not in favor of this move, as he noted in his will.   In 1588, he was the executor of his father’s will. He was also mentioned in his Uncle George’s will of 1596. In his own will dated September 8, 1630, proved on February 7, 1631, in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, he named his wife’s brothers, Andrew Cotton, "gent," and George Cotton, "Esq.," both residing at Combermere, as executors of his will. Robert Abel - was born in 1589 in Hemington, Leicestershire, England and died on 20 Jun 1663 in Rehoboth, MA . He was the son of George Abell and Frances Cotton. Robert married Joanna. She died after 1682 . Robert - occupation: tavern keeper - was the immigrant who came to New England with John Winthrop on the Winthrop Fleet, in June 1630 and settled at Rehobeth, MA. He took the Oath of Freeman May 18, 1631.   The first record of Robert in America is at Weymouth, Massachusetts where his name appeared on a list of persons who desired to be made freemen on October 19, 1630. On May 18, 1631 he took the Oath of Freeman. His name appears in court records of the Quarterly Court, held at Boston, in 1638 and 1640. In Weymouth his name appears in land transactions between October of 1642 and May of 1644. (Sources: - 1) Children: (Quick Family Chart) i.  Sergt. Sergt. Caleb Abell - was born in 1646 in Rehobeth, Ma and died on 17 Aug 1731 in Norwich, Ct . He was the son of Robert Abel. Sergt. Caleb married Margaret Post Jul 1669 in Norwich, MA. Margaret was born on 21 Feb 1653 in Middlesex, Ct. She was the daughter of John Post and Hester Hyde. She died Nov 1700 in Norwich, Ct .   Then Sergt. Caleb married Mary Miller. Mary was born in 1687. She died after 7 Aug 1731 . Sergt. Caleb - in 1668 moved to Norwich, Conn. In the original purchase of land when Norwich was settled, six acres having 16 rods front was assigned to Robert Wade, this he sold to Caleb Abell in 1677, and it was afterwards known as the Abell homestead. This property abutted on Town Street 16 rods, on the home lot of Morgan Bowers 72 rods, on the river 18 rods and on John Birchard land 74 rods. The location may be seen in a map on page 67 of "Caulkins' Norwich." On December 18, 1694 Caleb was appointed to keep his house as "an ordinari or of entertayment" for the year, or until another be chosen.   Caleb joined the first church of Norwich before 1701. He was Sergeant of the Norwich Train Band in 1701 and Selectman in 1682, Constable in 1684 and 1706 and Townsman in 1689. In the books of Grants in Norwich, there are 38 or more items to Caleb Abell. (Sources: - 1 (pg 49) ) Children with Margaret Post (Quick Family Chart) i.  Experience Abell was born Dec 1674 in Norwich, CT and died on 24 Oct 1763 in Norwich, CT . Experience married John Hyde. John was born Dec 1667 in Norwich, CT. He was the son of Samuel Hyde and Jane Lee. He died on 26 Jul 1727 in Norwich, CT . See Hyde family for children. ii.  Joanna Abel was born Nov 1682 in New London, Ct and died on 25 Nov 1759 in Lebanon, Ct and was buried in Loomis Cmty. . Joanna married Zackariah Loomis in 1707. Zackariah was born Nov 1681 in Lebanon, Ct. He was the son of John Loomis and Sarah Boltwood. He died on 6 Apr 1751 in Lebanon, Ct . Joanna - died of smallpox. See Loomis family for children.
